The Applied Chemistry major originated from the Fine Chemicals Teaching and Research Section established in 1979 when the university was founded. It has a history of over 40 years and offers a four-year undergraduate program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree. Currently, it admits approximately 135 undergraduate students each year. In 2006, it was designated as a key discipline in Tianjin. In 2012, it was selected as part of the first cohort of Tianjin’s Excellent Engineer Education Program. In 2012, the program co-established a National Engineering Education Practice Base with Tianjin Lighthouse Coatings Co., Ltd.In 2013, the Tianjin Key Laboratory of Organic Solar Cells and Photochemical Conversion was established on the strength of this program. In 2017, the program was recognized as an applied-oriented program by Tianjin’s higher education institutions. In 2018, the chemistry discipline underpinning the program entered the ESI global top 1%.In 2020, it was designated a National First-Class Undergraduate Program. In 2024,it was authorized to offer a doctoral program in the first-level discipline of Chemistry.

There are currently30full-time teachers, all of whom hold doctoral degrees in science, engineering, or PhDs from overseas institutions.Among them, 7 are doctoral supervisors and 24 are master’s supervisors. The faculty includes 14 professors and 12 associate professors, featuring one specially appointed professor under the National Major Talent Programand“Chang Jiang Scholar”Distinguished Professor, one individual under the Tianjin“Discipline Leader Cultivation Plan,”one recipient of the Outstanding Young Scientific Talent title under the first batch of the Tianjin Innovative Talent Promotion Planandfour scholars in the Tianjin 131 Innovative Talent Development Program.Over the past five years, the faculty has undertaken more than50 national and provincial/ministerial-level research projects, publishing over 100 high-impact papers in journals such asJ. Am. Chem. Soc.andAngew. Chem. Int. Ed.. Undergraduate students have also authored over 20 SCI-indexed papers as first authors. The major’s research platforms include the Tianjin Key Laboratory of“Organic Solar Cells and Photochemical Conversion”(2013) and the National Engineering Education Practice Base (2012). The total laboratory area spans 1,200 square meters, with equipment valued at over 18 million RMB. Furthermore, the program has established six off-campus practical training bases for undergraduates in collaboration with enterprises such as Nanjing Yangzi Petrochemical Co., Ltd., Tianjin Bohai Chemical Industry Group Co., Ltd., and TianjinRianlon New Materials Co., Ltd., providing substantial support for practical education in Applied Chemistry.

The Applied Chemistry major cultivates professionals with a solid theoretical foundation in chemistry, extensive applied chemistry knowledge, and strong modern chemical laboratory skills, equipping them with capabilities in chemical product R&D and chemical engineering design. Aligned with Tianjin's pillar industries like fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and new energy, graduates are prepared for careers in application research, technological development, production technology, and management within sectors such as new energy materials, petrochemicals, biomedicine, and fine chemicals. They may also pursue master's degrees in Applied Chemistry or related fields. Currently, the postgraduate admission rate (including admission through recommendation).
