AbstractIn this presentation, we describeour recent studies on transition metal-catalyzed transformations of alkynes.The overall strategy for catalyst design is built upon results from our priorreports on metal-catalyzed novel coupling reactions between N-H aromatic ketimines(1) and internal alkynes (2). Our discoveries from this modelreaction system include rhodium- and ruthenium-catalyzed [3+2] imine/alkyneannulation to form indenamines (3), rhodium-catalyzed [4+2] imine/alkyneannulation to form 3,4-dihydroisoquinolines (4), and nickel-catalyzedalkyne hydroamination with N-H imines (“hydroimination”) to form2-aza-1,3-dines (5). These redox-neutral imine/alkyne couplings enabledmodular synthesis of nitrogen containing-compounds in 100% atom-efficiency,high chemoselectivity, and distinct regio- and stereoselectivities. Mechanismunderstanding of these reactions has guided further development of newcatalytic transformations of alkynes, which include ruthenium-catalyzeddecarboxylative hydroarylation, rhodium-catalyzed [3+2] annulation for indolesynthesis, and nickel-catalyzed hydroamination and transfer-hydrogenationprocesses.
